EventsTag Launches Unique ‘Social Stream’ Initiative for Care Homes

A new initiative from EventsTag allows families to send real-time photos and messages to their loved ones in care homes around the country. With the messages displayed on screens in communal areas, the scheme aims to keep residents and their families in touch and does not rely upon residents themselves having any technological knowledge.

Making the decision to put an elderly or infirm relative into a home is hard. One outcome might be less frequent contact or fewer trips out. EventsTag hopes to make this transition easier by providing the personalised ?social streams?.

Using special hashtags, family members are able to share news and events with their sick or elderly relatives without the need for smartphones or computers, the use of which can prove overwhelming to some people.

EventsTag uses the specific APIs of social media channels such as Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, pulling together all tagged content into a single news feed. Posts are carefully moderated by EventsTag and can also be reviewed by the care home before being published.

As part of the initiative EventsTag offer free installation to all care homes within the UK and social media tutorials for care home residents.

Positive Response

EventsTag’s chief executive, Dan Strang, points out the growing demand for new and innovative ways for friends and family to keep in touch with care home residents. He is enthusiastic about the response the company have received, noting the ease with which grandparents and other relatives can be kept in the loop with family news and events, including photographs.

EventsTag is owned by parent company Crowd Reactive, which covers global events by delivering live social media feeds. The first to have the technology installed was an Enfield care home, Holly House. The owner, Hoel Holland, believes the scheme is a fantastic way to overcome technological barriers and help residents feel included in social media sharing. He describes the positive response from his residents as they wait in eager anticipation for messages to come through from friends and relatives, which they can then share with their fellow residents, friends and care home staff.

Reduce Confusion, Boredom and Depression

The scheme is similar to that used by New York-based care home Hebrew Home, whose residents are shown messages and recordings each day as part of an initiative to reduce forgetfulness and confusion. The messages include personal anecdotes and reminders that they need to get ready for the day with the help of care home staff.

It is thought the EventsTag scheme will work in a similar way – keeping residents updated while also providing useful and timely reminders to minimise confusion, boredom and depression.
